Scaffolding is very broad term for equipment used on construction sites to work at heights. Let’s, therefore, start by understanding the term a little bit better. Essentially, it is a temporary framework or platform made from metal and wood. It enables workers to execute tasks above ground level. Scaffolding is usually seen as something that is supported from the ground, but it can also be suspended from above. Regardless of the type, it is always in place so that workers can reach things they otherwise couldn’t.

Scaffolding

Today, there are many different types of scaffolding on the market. All the different types that exist, however, are built on the premise that safety has to come first. A construction company can either buy or rent a tower, and they often hire different ones for specific tasks. Let’s take a look at the different types that are out there.

Some of the Different Types of Scaffolding Equipment

Suspended Scaffolding

This type of scaffolding is generally used by window washers or installers. It uses heavy duty rope, pulleys and weights in order to stay in place. A balanced platform is created, which is the raised area, and this can lift or lower so that access to specific parts of a building can be created.

Cantilever Scaffolding

If use properly, this type of scaffolding is very easy to set up and it can carry equipment and one construction worker safely. It usually angles out from a structure, which makes it very different from other types of scaffolding equipment that is placed a few inches away from the building on which work has to be done.

Single Pole Scaffolding

This is made up of poles in a single row. The way it looks and is designed will vary depending on the structure that it is used with. It is not suitable for jobs on external structures that are simple to remove, or on heavily altered structures.

Birdcage Scaffolding

This type of scaffolding uses various rows of poles, spaced equally in parallel lines. This makes it look like a birdcage, hence the name. Once the poles are in place, wooden planks are lined above it, which are held in place safely with clamps. This type of scaffolding can only be used on one level at a time.

Aerial Lifts

Usually, these are popular on very tall buildings, as they can be lifted to various positions and heights. It is perfect for those who need to frequently change position in order to do their job. However, they have to be set up properly so that they don’t accidentally detach from their hooks. It is also for this reason that these are classed as the most dangerous of all types of scaffolding towers.

You now know the different types of scaffolding structures that exist and how they are used. If you work on a construction site or on existing homes and buildings, it is likely that you will have to use at least one type of scaffolding in your work.
