How Does Self-Storage Work, Exactly?

Mini storage and self-storage is one and the same thing. Essentially, it means space is rented out to someone on a monthly basis. This first became popular in this country, where it is still the most common. Storage can be an outdoor space, a locker, a container or even a room and it enables people to store what they want, when they want it.

Self-Storage

Usually, portable storage containers are made of a type of corrugated metal. They tend to not have windows and can be fully locked so that only the rent can access it. They usually have a metal roller door that enables access.

Security measures are also included to make sure nobody can get into the unit. Different storage methods and storage facilities have different options. The least safe is the portable unit placed in someone’s yard, which often only has a padlock. The safest are the CCTV controlled areas with permanent security guards, combination locks and access by appointment only. There are now even some that use biometrics in order to allow access.

These types of facilities have a variety of features as well. For instance, you can now get them with climate control and some even have outdoor boat storage. It is also increasingly common to find a unit with electricity.

How Does it Work?

If you want to store your goods in a facility, you have to start by finding a unit that is right for you, and you then simply rent it. The owners of the unit will determine what their terms and conditions are. Some, for instance, allow round the clock access, some include transportation to your location, some have rules about what can and can’t be stored in them, and so on. Regardless of what the rules are, make sure you keep an inventory of everything you have stored in it.

If you happen not to pay for your units, whatever was kept inside it will be auctioned off. This will help the business recover their lost costs. You will have to sign an agreement to this effect before you can rent a unit.

Some Consideration

There are a few things that you should consider before you rent a unit:

  1. You can find storage units pretty much everywhere now, which means that whatever your needs happen to be, you should be able to find a provider that can meet those needs.
  2. Self-storage and warehouse storage are two different things. With a warehouse, lots of people could, in theory, access your belongings. With self-storage, your unit is yours and yours alone.
  3. Finally, because the business of storage is getting so popular, competition is getting stiffer. This is something you can take advantage of. You can even haggle a bit so that you get a better deal on your monthly rental. It never hurts to ask, after all.

As you can see, if you have a need for storage facilities, there are lots of options out there for you.
