Handling Tech Blunders While Vacationing Abroad

Traveling from country to country is somewhat a dream for most of us, but there are several different things you should probably consider depending on where you have decided to travel.  Bathroom facilities are different.  Electrical sockets are different.  Custom and cuisine varies from place to place, and sometimes the parameters of your mobile plan can pose an issue.  The best thing to do is educate yourself prior to traveling.  Here are a few helpful tips to assist you in your journey abroad.

Plug & Socket Differences

Most people may not be aware that there are several different types of electrical sockets depending on which country you are visiting.  The United States, Mexico, Canada, and Japan commonly use the same type of outlets, the standard two prong and three prong plugs.  So if you’re planning to cruise around Niagara Falls, or even brave the big cities of Japan, there’s no need to worry.  Your power cords will fit perfectly in the hotel outlets, and you won’t miss out on those digital photos of your family’s memorable moments.

Europe, South America, and Asia are a different story.  These countries use a two prong circular outlet with a different electrical output than the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Japan.  Instead of 100-127 volts, these sockets push 220-240 volts, so you wouldn’t want to try and plug your Americanized cord into one of these.  Actually, it wouldn’t even fit.

India has its own sort of sockets.  Their power cords are three circular prongs, and wouldn’t be compatible with any other sort of plug.  You will have to be sure to purchase the proper equipment before visiting.

Mobile Plan Education

Check your mobile plan before traveling to see what your mobile company’s policy is on roaming charges.  Make sure you know how voice, text, and data are billed for your particular plan. Don’t overlook these specifics, or you may just have a heart attack when your next phone bill arrives in the mail.  International communication can be a beautiful thing.  Just make certain you know what you’re getting yourself into before making the call.

Protect Your Computer

Before you travel out of the country with your computer, you should back up your files and data completely.  This way, if anything happens while you are away, you can easily restore your computer to the condition it was before you left.

If you are going to bring your laptop along for the journey, you should make sure you have the proper socket adapters.  The same goes for any other rechargeable device.  You already read the first section of this article.  Don’t get caught with your plugs down.

Lastly, make sure all of your antivirus software is updated and functioning properly.  You should also realize that other governments may very well track your internet traffic without asking your permission or even notifying you that they are watching.
